There are too many times that I have mentioned that the wedding I shoot are always awesome or amazing. In fact, awesome and amazing sometime can be really a understatement. I am really honored to be the wedding photographer for Ilya and Angie’s wedding. It’s a wedding that all photographers will be dreaming of shooting and capturing all the nice moments and events. An extravagant wedding celebration with nice big band performance, classy ballroom setup and a lot of smiling faces throughout the whole celebration. The highlight of the banquet came with 2 dance performance; one by Annabel and Terence dancing to the song “Por Una Cabeza” re-flashing the dance scene in the movie “Scents of a woman” and a 2nd surprise dance routine put up by Annabel and her beloved Daddy. It’s definitely a fantasia wedding celebration for many guests as this wedding was also gazed by many celebrities. I shall stop the typing, enjoy the photos. : )

Streets of Udaipur – India

It was an amazing 2011 for me last year traveling to many beautiful parts of the world shooting pre-wedding and destination wedding. One of the pre-wedding shoot I have done last December was in Udaipur, India. I have always wanted to travel to India and this trip really opens up my vision. It once again reminded me that though our living standard here in Singapore is high, we are fortunate to be staying in one of the safest country in the world.

Firstly, I have to apologize for this super duper lengthy blog entry. At the end of viewing the photos, you will understand how much I enjoyed shooting this wedding. : )

I first get to know Mylene when she was shooting with The Wedding Paparazzi(TWP), one of the leading wedding videography company in Singapore. Mylene leaves a really deep impression with her smile and I can tell everyone adores her smile. Working along side with her, couple’s parents and the couples themselves are always smiling when talking to her. : ) I am honored when she rang me up one day announcing her wedding and would like me to be her wedding photographer. Having a close working relationship with TWP, I knew this wedding is going to be really fun and exciting.

With all the smiles you can see in the photos. Everyone attended the wedding brings back joy and good memories from the event. I really have to say there’s no way anyone at the wedding celebration can don’t love this bubbly couple. Congratulations to Jon and Mylene. Thank you for having me at your awesome celebration. : )

The ISPWP (The International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers) Winter 2011 Contest Result is announced today and I am really happy an oversea pre-wedding photo of Crono and Tze-Pen shot in Paris fetched me an international award under the Venue/ Locations category. Congratulations to fellow Singapore photographers who have also won awards from this contest. : )

As a wedding photographer, I am really fortunate to have traveled to many parts of the world to capture beautiful memories for wedding couples. And I have to say, the world is a beautiful place. Mother nature have given us human being so much inspiration in life to live, to love and to celebrate.

Recent reports have shown an astonishing number of sharks being killed for shark finning, an estimated number of 43 million sharks are killed per year. Researchers concluded that from 1996 to 2000, 26 to 73 million sharks were traded yearly. While you are enjoying that 40 grams of shark fin, the remaining 400 kilos of the body are thrown back to the sea.

With much love and care for our getting older Mother Earth, Derrick Ong Photography will be giving a S$100.00 discount for couples who do not put shark fin soup on their banquet menu on their wedding day.

I hope this small effort and contribution will help shark conservation so that our next generation will still be able to see sharks swimming in the aquarium alive and not in the museum. : ) So spread the words: Say “NO” to Shark Finning.

Frances + Jalen: Destination Wedding in Sydney

Frances and Jalen were friends of Cheryl and Derrick whom I shot their wedding last year in Melbourne. The wedding took place at Dunbar House located on Watsons Bay in Sydney, Australia. Despite a rainy spring and the outdoor ceremony have to be shifted into a indoor venue, the weather did not stop the fun and happy celebration. The event hall was filled with laughters and Frances surprised all the guests with her beautiful voice when she sang and dedicated songs to Jalen. I shall let the photos tell the story.

It was a great season for wedding and for me, christmas came early this year. The latest AGWPJA Q3 result is out and I am really happy to share that I have won 2 international awards under the Portrait of Bride and Groom Alone category.

This 2 months been real busy for me with a tight Wedding Day and Pre-wedding schedule and I just returned from Sydney after a wedding shoot, I have to apologise for not updating my blog. While I am writting this, I still have a full line up of post productions to work on (But I am definetly enjoying every single bit of it, sharing joy and happy moments of all the fantastic couples). Nonetheless, I must take a 10 mins break to update this piece of good news onto the blog.

The ISPWP(The International Society of Professional Wedding Photographer) Fall 2011 Contest result is announced and I am really happy to share that I have won 5 international awards in this latest contest. This is the first time I took part in the contest as I only recently gotten their membership. In the Oriental Mood: Terence + Serene

This set of pre-wedding photos of Terence and Serene are taken a while back in Thailand. For this blog post, I am dedicating it to the photos taken in the oriental mood. The first time I met this couple to discuss about the pre-wedding shoot, Serene was already mentioning about a really nice blue cheong sum she have tailor made and she want it to be featured in the pre-wedding album. They booked a really nice hotel in Chinatown of Bangkok and it really gave me amazing settings to create these images. As a fan of Hong Kong movie director Wong Ka Wai, this set of images are truly inspired by the mood from his movie. Thank you Terence and Serene for able to bring out the mood for me to capture. Thumbs up guys!

Jeanette + Lionel

It was an eventful and action packed morning. The sisters are all well geared to “torture” the brothers and nowadays technology plays a part in gate crashing too, Lionel was asked to dance with his brothers and the video was immediately uploaded to Facebook. In order to enter the house, he must achieve 35 “likes” before the end of the gate crashing session. After about an hour of action, Lionel enters the house with 12 “likes” and lots of ang bao given out to the “sweet sisters”. Everyone had fun and it was a touching morning when one of the wish Lionel had for the marriage is he wished to live longer than Jeanette so that she don’t have to bear the pain of losing a love one if he would to depart first. Lovely couple! Thank you Jeanette and Lionel for having me as your photographer. Wishing the both of you a blissful marriage. : ) Enjoy the photos.

AGWPJA Q2 2011 Contest Result

This Wednesday morning woke up receiving a piece of good news. : ) I have won a international award for the latest AGWPJA contest under the Ceremony category. This photo is one of my personal favorite taken at Kester and Cecelia’s beach wedding at Sentosa. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them once again for having me as their wedding photographer to make this image possible. : )

Ceremony Category: 18th Place
Judges Comment: This image finds compositional balance by weighting the expanse of empty space above the canopy with the myriad of details below. There is so much to see in this photo. People swimming, a lone palm tree, ships on the horizon, an attendee checking the back of his digital camera – not to mention the bride, groom and colors. And if that wasn’t enough, you have to love that Chinook helicopter dragging a flag at far-right.

ABBAS 45 years in photography is a exhibition currently held at the National Museum. Abbas is a Magnum photographer and I am fortunate to meet him in person and attended his workshop on photojournalism. This legendary photographer who have covered many of the world’s most terrifying wars is a man with great vision, perspective and a master in the craft of black and white photography. I took photo with him but he don’t want his photo to be published or posted. As a respect to Abbas and agreed not showing photos with his face, here are some photos of the legend.

The exhibition is now on till 18 Sep 2011 at the National Museum.

The International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers (ISPWP)

I am really happy to announce that I am accepted as a member of The International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers. The organisation have a stringent set of requirements before a membership is approved and given to a photographer. Here are some of the membership requirements that the organtisation looks into (infomation from ISPWP website):

Membership Requirements

The ISPWP maintains high standards for membership based on experience, talent, integrity, professionalism and references:

Experience: Members must have photographed a minimum of 50 weddings as the primary in-charge photographer. Weddings shot as a tag-along, second, or backup photographer do not count. This is the minimum experience requirement, many ISPWP members have shot hundreds of weddings.

Talent: Members must submit a website/blog/portfolio for review by a panel of ISPWP members. Online portfolio galleries must demonstrate artistic and technical ability. The portfolio must display a minimum of three galleries of complete weddings. Galleries that only display “selected favorites” from multiple weddings will be rejected.

Integrity: Members must have no outstanding complaints with consumer protection organizations such as the Better Business Bureau.

Professionalism: Members must operate in accordance with the ISPWP Code of Conduct. This protects both the photographer and the client, and provides assurance to the client they are dealing with a professional who takes their business seriously.

How is the ISPWP different from other wedding photographer directories?

We’re picky. Most online wedding photography directories are simply glorified yellow pages that anyone can join if they simply pay the fee. Experienced pros could be listed alongside someone who just bought their first camera, took a few pictures at their cousin’s wedding, and put up a website. The ISPWP is an exclusive organization of truly experienced professionals for discerning clientele. Our requirements in the areas of experience, talent, integrity, and professionalism set us apart. We will never compromise our standards just to get more members. If that means we remain small and exclusive, so be it.

We’re small. While most other photography directories have no limit to the size of their membership, the ISPWP limits the number of “local” photographers to about 40 per location. Our intent is to provide a good selection of photographers for each location, while providing adequate exposure for all of our members. A smaller, tighter membership helps to keep the quality of photographers high.

I always enjoy shooting outdoor theme setting wedding. Kester and Cecelia’s beach wedding celebration is held in Sentosa and they take great pride to customise every details the way they like it. This is almost the first wedding that I have covered that dogs are allowed in the premises. Both of them are dog lovers and they have a charming Corgi. The celebration is casual and chill yet every aspect from decorations to foods are well taken care of by the newly wedded. Destination Wedding in Spain: Grette + Mark (Part 2)

As promised, here is part 2 of the wedding celebration. After the blissful ceremony, all the guests walked through a very nice and charming old Spanish town in Altea to the lunch reception. Destination Wedding in Spain: Grette + Mark

I am going to first apologise that this will be a very long entry. How long? I can’t post all in one entry, so I am going to spilt them into 2 entries. This is a destination wedding of Grette and Mark in a very small nice town name Altea, in Alicante, Spain. Grette is my good friend for many years since Secondary School and Mark is from Amsterdam, Holland. The day kick start with Mark’s buddies from Amsterdam given a round of Singapore gate crashing experience. The guys did a mavellous job clearing all the “stunts” the sisters have prepared. (Later did I found out that they actually didn’t know they could say NO to the girl’s request, poor guys). They were so eager to help Mark get the bride, they even climb the gate even before they were open. I shall let the photos tell the stories for the morning event and the blissful wedding ceremony. Congratulations once again Grette and Mark.

Mark went around searching for Grette who went into hiding, one of the buddy found a frog and he thought by kissing the frog, Grette will appear.

And after Mark found Grette, all the topless guys came in to kiss on Grette’s hand, a real royal treatment.

Thank you everyone for your kind patience as I did not update this blog for a while as the past few months are really busy for me. After all the back to back travelling for local and overseas wedding and pre-wedding shoot, I am now working on all the photos taken at many wonderful weddings I have shot the last 2 months.

Shooting Tze-Pen and Crono’s wedding is like going to a reunion party for me. I have shot Crono elder brother’s wedding and their very good family friend Jerome’s wedding few years back. Seeing them again after all this years really makes me feel touched and happy as I have made many wonderful friends thoughout the years as a wedding photographer.

The wedding is fun and filled with family love and happiness and lots of laughters throughout the whole celebrations. I shall let the photos tell the story. Enjoy!!

In view of the recent Japan tragedy, our hearts go out to the nation and their people. To show our support, here’s a humble collaborative effort from K ki, Derrick Ong Photography and The Little Dröm Store.

2010 WPJA Q4 Contest

The 2010 WPJA Q4 contest result is annouced today and the contest is becoming tougher with world class wedding photographers around the world competing and showcasing only the best the world has to offer in wedding photojournalism. With 24,112 entry to this fourth quarter contest , only 360 entries were awarded.

I am glad to share that I have won a 13th placing international award under the Reception Category. Here is the judge’s comment:

He is from Germany and she is from India, fate brought them together and now they become “Global Citizens”, as quoted by Yamini. This wedding is full of love and laughters, lots of dancing, lots of hugs and lots of energy. It’s a wedding that brought 2 international culture together to become one and it shows through the many dancing program that the couple have planned. Melbourne Pre-Wedding : Jon + Alena

I am very happy to witness and document Heng Kim and Yoke Lan’s wedding. Heng Kim is my polytechnic classmate when I was doing my Mechanical Engineering Diploma at the Ngee Ann Polytechnic. He is always the very hardworking student who will finish all his tutorial and study every single page of the notes and textbook during exam. Me, on the other hand always borrow his tutorial and like every lazy student, submit what I copied. Ok, the story will be never ending talking about the past and this nice friend. Judges Comment: This is a nice moment of a bride as her entourage helps her on the stairs. The dress becomes a flowing mass that they all have to handle. Shooting from a high angle helps capture all that’s going on.

Judges Comment: A whimsical moment that was caught by the photographer. It’s well-framed and simple. It gets the point across quickly.

First up, my sincere apology for “Missing in Action” in updating my blog. Have being extremely busy lately with AD and pre-weddings and lots of post production.

This will be a long post with lots of photos thus bear with me when it’s loading in your monitor. I have shot Jeremy and Laurencia’s pre-wedding awhile back and yes, they just had their actual day celebration recently. This wedding is a constant affirmation of why I choose to become a wedding photographer many years back. The kind of emotions, love and bonding between the couple and their family are priceless and precious which in my opinion, one of the most valuable thing that can happen in anyone’s life. I am happy to be part of their wedding as their wedding photographer to document all the heart warming moments.

Kelvin + Hong Zheng : Pre-wedding in Japan

I have always love Japan be it for pre-wedding shoot or for leisure holiday. This Japan pre-wedding shoot for Kelvin and Hong Zheng was taken in Spring this year and this pair of fun loving couple recently celebrated their wedding actual day on the 10.10.10. I would like to take this oppotunity to congratulate the both of them for a successful wedding celebration.

This trip was really fun and enjoyable despite the early spring, it was still very cold with temperature sometime falls below 10 degrees. However, Kelvin and Hong Zheng are always game to go all out for any kind of poses for the sake of photography moment. Thank you guys, you rock!!!

[AG]WPJA 2010 Q2 Result

I am excited to share that I have won 2 international awards from the recent AGWPJA 2010 Q2 contest. The photo from Edmund and Celine’s wedding won me a 2nd placing in the “Getting Ready” Category and the photo from Ashley and Kerri’s wedding won me a 8th placing in the “Emotion” Category. Getting Ready Category - 2nd Place
Judges Comment: Symmetry often suggests distance, creating a scene meant to be viewed as an observer, yet this image through it’s clever “entry points” leads the eye to a simple feast of moments.

Emotion Category – 8th Place
Judges Comment: There is no angst in this image like one often feels in a mo-ment such as this. That isn’t entirely the result of the subject either. Instead, take a look at the oblique sharp angles of everything object in the background and then look at the shapes found in the subjects. The room itself asks us to smile with them in this warm moment.

Raising Leaders – Watoto Children’s Choir

As a photographer, I always wanted to contribute back to the society for how the society have helped me to become who I am today. The Watoto(Uganda) Children’s Choir is in Singapore recently and I am happy to be able to get up close and personal with this group of kids which are doing a world tour to raise fund for thier unfortunate peers back in Uganda. This choir is a group of ophan who have lost their parents to AIDS (HIV) and war. Each and every one of them have their own story and a faith of hope for a better tomorrow. I am happy that I can contibute my small effort in capturing honest photos of them to raise fund for this tour.

Suping and Yanjie is a pair of gentle and quiet couple but always very smiley. I first met them when I am shooting Pearline and Sam’s wedding and now I am honored to be covering their big day . This pair of singing love bird met and fell in love during their JC days and they are really good with singing. Bali is not just a perfect short getaway holiday location but also a nice and beautiful place for pre-wedding shoot. I am honored to shoot for this young and really fun couple Kerri and Ashley. We had lots of fun and laughter throughout the whole session and I am really glad that they are game to be in their swimwear with Kerri in a nice white bikini and Ashley in a pair of dark color shorts and a black bow tie. I really enjoyed this shoot and I look forward to shooting their destination wedding this weekend in the nice resort in Bintan, Indonesia.

One of the greatest job satisfaction as a wedding photographer is many of the wedding couples whom I shoot their wedding became my friends and I am happy that I am constantly being updated with their family events and occasions. Linda and Raymond is the couple which I shoot their Pre-wedding in Greece 3 years ago and 2 years after their wedding, they submitted their “marriage homework”. I seldom shoot maternity but I am really honored to shoot for Linda. We discussed on how they wanted their photos to be and they wanted it to more lifestyle, refreshing and “spa feel”. Derek + Cheryl Wedding Day in Melbourne

This may not be the first time I shoot in Melbourne but the previous experiences are to cover pre-wedding. This trip is slightly different as I am there to cover Derek and Cheryl’s wedding day. In the setting of romantic autumn season, the church ceremony is set nicely in a church in Melbourne city itself and the weather is just amazing for the wedding. I really enjoyed shooting this wedding and I am really blessed with really awesome lighting during the outdoor photo session at their favourite hangout cafe as well as the sunny brighton beach.

As always, I shall let the photos tell the story and my sincere apology for the many photos posted for this entry (I have already cut down 70% of what I have initially selected for this post). Enjoy!

Dear all,

First of all, a sincere apology for the really long disappearing act in posting new pictures and updates on my old livejournal blog. Hawaii, Las Vegas, London, New Zealand or Singapore?

This are the few shortlisted wedding locations in Warrick and Mohini’s mind when they are planning their wedding. Born and grew up in New Zealand and both currently working in London, Warrick and Mohini fell in love with Singapore simply through all the transit session they have when they travel from London back home to New Zealand, they love the food variety Singapore have to offer.

I received a phonecall 3 months back from Warrick who called and enquired my service from London and I met them only a week before the wedding but we hit off well immediately. The wedding ceremony is held at The Sentosa and I am honored to be documenting this wedding celebration. Friends and family of Warrick and Mohini flew in from various parts of the world to attend this wedding and it’s a heart warming celebration filled with fun, love and laughters.

10th Anniversary Shoot in Taipei

I have known Wilson and Melinda for a long time, they got married 10 years ago when I was still a hobby photographer practising with a film camera back then. Time flies, they have 2 beautiful girls now and for their 10th anniversary, they asked if I can do a 10th anniversary photoshoot for them. I agreed without any hesitation as its a great honor and pleasure. After some discussion, Wilson and Melinda decided to have the shoot done in Taipei, Taiwan.

The shooting trip was relaxed yet very fun and we had alot of nice food especially the Famous Fried Chicken Chop. Thank you Wilson and Melinda for bringing me around Taipei as well as the nice BBQ dinner.

Kenneth and Cheryl chose this song by Lea Salonga for their first march at the wedding banquet and it was sing live by Rebecca, Cheryl’s sister-in-law. I personally feel it’s a very appropriate song especially when Kenneth sang a improvised version to Cheryl as a surprise during the thank you speech. It’s really a moment of love and everyone who attended the wedding is touched by the performance and I am very sure the lyrics of the song is exactly what Kenneth wants to tell Cheryl:

WPJA Q2 2009 Result

This week is a very exciting week for me. After winning the AGWPJA award, I was informed today that I also win another international award for the latest WPJA Q2 2009 contest under the Creative Portrait Category.

I can’t thank enough to all my friends and great couples out there for all your continous support and believing in my photography style and work. I will continue to stay focus and work on more creative photography art and to capture more great artistic moments for couples whom I will be documenting your wedding.

My apology for not updating my blog for a while. August is a busy month for me though is the lunar 7th month. Was busy with shoots as well as clearing backlog.

I have lots of wedding photo on queue to be updated on my blog and I will do so over the next 2 weeks. First up, here is a small intimate solemnisation ceremony for Jeanette and Lionel. Jeanette is the sweet cousin of Grette whom is a close friend of mine for 20 years; since secondary one. I remember seeing Jeanette once when she is still in her secondary school but time flies, she is a fine young lady now and I am honored to be engaged to be her wedding photographer.

The ceremony was held on a yatch and the whole settings are filled with sunshine, fun and laughters. Congratulations Lionel and Jeanette.

When I first discuss about the wedding program with Ian and Karen, Ian already had in mind a wedding banquet that is different from the usual hotel banquet that we usually attend. He wanted an art gallery; one that displays a combination series of pre-wedding photos and collage photo frames of all the people who are important in their lifes.

The whole wedding celebration is very fairy tale and are filled with alot of surprises especially when Ian arrived in the morning in a 3 car length limousine to fetch his bride. All the guest at the banquet had a great time especially when the sky got lite up by fireworks, courtesy of the National Day Parade rehearsal.

I get to know Cheryl when I shoot for Daniel and Sharon’s Pre-wedding shoot in Tasmania 3 years ago and we maintain in good contact thereafter and I am honored to shoot Cheryl’s Solemnisation last year.

Time flies, I just return from their Oversea Pre-wedding shoot in Penang and it was a really fruitful and enjoyable trip. I have never been to Penang but I have heard alot about the famous Peranakan Cuisine.

Covering Leo and Roxanne’s wedding ceremony reminded me once again I have not made a wrong choice in becoming a wedding photographer.

As a wedding photojournalist, wedding photography coverage is no longer just making sure every corner of the event is covered. It’s about telling a real story through my eyes and present them in pictures as timeless art, the laughters, the happy tears and the people who are important to the couple are important elements to complete the story.

The wedding ceremony is really touching and full of happy tears, the connections between them with their friends and family are priceless and precious. Leo and Roxanne are really well loved by people around them.

I have known Karen for over 10 years now and she is always very bubbly and full of laughters, previously as a flight stewardess, she is very well travelled and always keep me updated with the latest National Geographic Magazine.

Ian on the other hand is cheerful and a real good gentlemen, even for the shoot, he make sure everyone are feeling comfortable especially his lovely bride and the shoot ends with Ian giving a treat to a wonderful BBQ wagyu beef dinner at Chijmes.

1st Place – Ceremony
Judge’s Comments: 1. OUTSTANDING image. The design, angle and composition are as good as it gets. The oval, the rail with the white, the reflected chandalier are all just awesome. This is a great image. About the only thing I could suggest at all would be to possibly tone down the dress just a hair to give more detail and clone out the tiny little black spots on the concrete squares. There are two in the lower center area. Regardless, this is still a really great image.

9th Place – Wedding Day and Engagement Portrait
Judge’s Comments: 1. The horizontal lines and the light contribute to make this a dynamic image. I love the guy up on the side but wish his leg was not quite in front of the palm tree. The whites in the image could use a little more detail but still a really nice image.

I am always a great supporter for local art scene, though not physcially participating in it but I do often watch local play and musical performance.

I got a call one day from a local fashion designer and she likes my style of photography and would like to collaborate with me for a exhibition showcase of a collection of clothing she designed.

+9: the A/W Highlights Fashion Exhibition

This exhibition consist +9 designers, each collaborating with a photographer or a videographer to do a series of visuals/video that represents their AW’09/10 collection. This exhibition aims to bring audiences closer to the collection, having enough time to feel the colour/motion/sound of the collection instead of the usual runway show.

Venue: Substation
Duration: Starts this Saturday 22 May and will last for one week.

Every photo is a moment remembered. As a wedding photographer for 7 years, I have covered many weddings which are referred by couples whom I have shot their wedding before.

I covered Derick and Syn Yi’s wedding 3 years ago at the Swissotel Stamford which is still called Westin Stamford Hotel back then. It’s one of the wedding I rememebr clearly because it still holds a record for the number of tables which I have covered so far for a wedding banquet, slightly over a 100 tables.

3 years later, I am honored to be engaged to cover Derick’s sister Xuling’s wedding, though I did not get to talk much to her during Derick’s wedding, the chemistry is really comfortable when I meet Jianlong and Xuling to discuss about their wedding.

Although they do not hold as many tables as her brother, the wedding is still filled with laughters, emotions and joy.

Everything have a beginning. A common question I am often asked is how I started photography. I was 19 back then and this Nikon FM2 SLR camera is the first camera in my life that got me addicted to photography. A friend lent it to me and since then photography becomes part of my life.

I use this camera for my ever first wedding assignment when I was 21; shooting a campmate’s wedding. He got really tight budget for his wedding and he asked if I could do him a favour to cover the event. Since that first assignment, I already got wedding referal.

Today, I bought this 2nd hand camera online, though the exterior show signs of abrasion and scratches, the mechanical part within are still in tip-top working condition. It may not be able to compare with the Nikon D3 and Nikon 700 which I am currently using, having to own this camera many years later really brings back good old memories and here it is, the Nikon FM2 which helps me started it all.

I am excited to showcase this set of photos as this wedding took place at a slightly different location to the usual hotel setup which I covered. This is held at The White Rabbit at Dempsy Road and the place used to be an old chapel. Daniel and Eliza wanted a personal yet nice and cosy function to host their family and friends. I am happy to cover the event together with KC from Greymatter Photography and Chris from Coffeestains Photography.

Getting Ready – 6th position
Judges’s comments:
Very simple shot with a strong graphic appeal. the veil and framing of this image really make it a strong image. It is an excellent example of how something so simple can still be very dramatic.

Getting Ready – 11th position
A nice silhouette. i believe this image would be stronger if the left side was cropped and the top was cropped down to eliminate the bar. That said, it is still a very nice image.

Engagement Portrait – 5th position
A really nice way to illustrate this. Very well done and very different. The only thing I would suggest is to change the arm in the last step on the woman before they meet. Currently, her arms extends into the couple and I think it would be stronger if there was just a little space.

The warm tones here are a nice touch and I love the balance with the bicycles on both sides.

This couple is really bubbly and nice couple to talk to, I had a good time shooting their pre-wedding in Yunnan China last year and I still remember the tonnes of jokes and laughter we had during the journey.

On the wedding day, Lijuan just recovered from fever and was still quite worried in the morning that she might not pull through the day. But after her prince charming Junjia arrive to fetch her, she became ok and they had a wonderful and fun day celebrating their wedding romance.

Pre-wedding Photography

The weather in Singapore is always unpredictable especially with the recent haze. As a wedding photographer, I got to be constantly on the lookout for the change of weather and how it affects the lighting quality.

When I first met Jeffrey and Sharon, they gave me a very down to earth and sincere feel of their personality and I don’t see a moment which they are not smiling, especially when they are looking at each other.

TONIGHT -Franz Ferdinand

How times flies, It was 3 years ago when I was given a very special and memorable assignment – to shoot the first ever concert by Scottish rock quartet Franz Ferdinand. Today, a casual browse inside a CD store took me on a trip down memory lane back to 3 years ago, when I accidentally stumbled upon Franz Ferdinand latest album: TONIGHT.

Ever since I was introduced to the band’s music, I have been a fan of their innovation and originality in music. Shooting their concert was a mind-blowing experience, one of the best I ever covered. I even rated it higher than the concert by legandary UK band Oasis which I was also the assigned photographer.

Although I wasn’t planning to buy anything, I picked up the album without hesitation and headed for the cashier. And so here it is, TONIGHT, the brand new album by one of my favourite band of the decade – Franz Ferdinand.

As promised, I will be blogging and posting more updates. I shot Heng Yang and Shuian Harn’s pre-wedding few months back and I can still remember the amount of laughters we had during the shoot.

I never seen so many “jiemeis” at a wedding before, Shuian Harn is a netball player for her constituency and the whole netball team is supporting her on her wedding day. Even at the banquet, the ladies are really drinking much more than Heng Yang and buddy who are officers of the army.

I shoot Alvin and Ellen’s Pre-wedding in Melbourne last August and time flies, they just hold their wedding recently and same like the shoot in Melbourne, this couple is really fun to shoot. I am blessed with great light in the morning and a power packed dinner filled with moments.

Happy New Year to all.

Sorry for not updating my blog, I am all caught up with shooting and post productions of many wonderful weddings I have convered the past 2 months. I will update and post them here soon once I complete editing the backlogs.

Just to share a piece of good news. One of my entry for the recent AGWPJA contest wins a 7th position in the reception Ambiance Category. Here is the winning shot and the judge’s comment:

Judge’s comment: “This image really works for me because it’s got great color, tone, movement (gesture). The way the area in the middle far left of the background is toned looks mysterious. To nitpick, I might bring the lower hand down in tone; feels a bit hot. It would be really interesting to see how this actually prints out big. Gorgeous use of existing light makes this image a keeper. Warm earth tones and appealing lighting create an enthused photo with edgy composition. You can almost hear the music.”

It was a joy shooting Leo and Roxanne’s pre-wedding shoot. The first time we met, I remember how the couple shared with me their great wedding shoot ideas: how they wanted to have their pictures taken at uncommon locations which of course, I was more than happy to explore.

We had so much fun during the shoot. I must commend Leo’s charater. He is not only a gentlemen but also good husband material. He never failed to make sure Roxanne is comfortable and feeling ok throughout the entire shoot.

The past one month is really a very busy month for me. I apologise for not updating my blog for a while.

Peak period(Lunar eigth month onwards) is always a love and hate situation for me. As a wedding photographer for coming to 6 years, one very important lesson I have learnt is to constantly stay sensitive to the environment, weather and lighting in order to create the best shots out of every wedding assignment I shoot.

As the saying goes: There’s no bad weather, there’s only different good weather.

I never see a moment when I don’t see Joann is smiling or laughing. The romance for this young couple blossom in the sky as both of them are cabin cew of our local airline. When it comes to wedding banquet, alot of couples will feel that a wedding lunch will not be as fun and grand as compared to a wedding dinner. This is totally a wrong concept of a wedding lunch banquet.

Jerry and Roxanne had their wedding day with customary tea ceremony in the morning and a wedding lunch at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. I must say the celebration was a really enjoyable and fun one packed with full of laughters and moments which I am very sure the couple, their parents and friends who are invited will remember this happy wedding for a lifetime. Even granny did a high 5 to her relative.

Underage for alcohol? No worries, she can still Yum Sheng!

“Come What May” is the song William and Dawn sang during their first match-in at the wedding banquet. This highly energised couple whom I shot their pre-wedding in Gold Coast Australia had their wedding celebration over the weekend and it’s a day packed event with lots of fun and laughter.

And the moment they set their eyes on each other, it was like the lyrics of the song:

Chung Yuan & Diana

I was asked this same question many times, Why do I want to be a wedding photographer out of the many different trade of photography out there.

My answer is a very simple one. Wedding is a very intimate and personal event of 2 persons becoming one officially and the joyous occasion is celebrated with their family and love ones. It marks the first day of the couple’s life as husband and wife and to be there to capture all the moments and converting them into beautiful memories. No other photography trade can leave as great an impact as wedding photographer does in someone’s life.

I covered Chung Yuan and Diana’s wedding over a 2 days event with a solemnisation ceremony at The Botanical Garden on the first and a customary wedding on the second. The couple and friends have so much fun and laughter and it’s really heart warming to witness and shooting this wedding.

As a wedding photographer, my job is to capture moments and create timeless art and memories for the couple and when the wedding celebration ends and a brand new beginning for the newly wedded, it marks the end of my assignment.

Over the years there are some couples that after the wedding, we still maintain good friendship and as facebook is getting popular nowadays, getting connected is one way to keep in touch. I received an invitation sms a month ago from Daniel and Sharon, the couple whom I shoot their pre-wedding in Tasmania 2 years back. Their baby boy Joshua is celebrating his 1st birthday.

Witnessing all the stages and moments from seeing them planning their pre-wedding and wedding, having a succesful wedding day celebration and now, their son’s birthday, it really makes my job a very satisfying and fulfiling one.

The first time they met was on the mahjong table during university days and that begins the romantic journey for Alvin and Ellen.

I just returned from shooting their pre-wedding in Melbourne and I have to really salute this young and lovely couple to brave through the bitter cold and chilly winter for the shoot. The wind is really at it’s maximum speed even Ellen’s veil was blown away during our shoot at the 12 apostles.

It’s 6 degree cold with rain and wind but I can tell their love keeps them warm throughout. Thumbs up guys!

Tribute to Nikon D200

Alot of people ask me this question, which is more important in getting great photos? Camera or Photographer?

My answer: it’s a chicken and egg kind of question and answer. As a photographer, a good camera is a important tool to help me convert my vision and imagination into visual art that can freeze moments and time. Without it, moments will only be remembered in our mind.

I sold a camera today which I was using for the past 2 years, the Nikon D200 DSLR. This camera have travelled a long way with me to shoot in Greece, Australia, Japan etc and it have helped me in capturing some of the best moments I have witnessed.

The D200 well executed my vision and idea.

The month of June is the time teachers tie their knot. I have the pleasure to shoot for Melvin and Yee Tien’s wedding just before I depart for my Gold Coast shoot. I was already warned in the morning that Yee Tien will be a crying baby during 3 possible occasions throughout the day. As a wedding photographer, this are precious moments that will be captured and transformed into pictures that will be remembered as beautiful memories. Yee Tien is quite strong to only tears during veiling by her parents and when she bid farewell to her parents before she leave the house.

This is one of the very few indian wedding I have covered, the first time I met Harish and Amelia, the chemistry was already right. They have a trendy mindset and they want their photos more of journalism and story telling. Wedding moments should be documented the most sincere, real and journalistic way. The ceremony is solemn yet fun and heartwarming with all the blessings and greetings from their friends and relative.

Blue sky, fine sand and sunny beaches are what the Surfer’s paradise at Gold Coast Australia is all about. I just came back from a pre-wedding shoot for William and Dawn. The weather there is amazingly cool and cold at times due to it is winter now and Gold Coast is just next to the sea. Dawn, thanx for braving thru the cold wind for the shoot and William, you are really a great cook, thanx for all the breakfast and the the dinner feast you have prepared for us. It’s really fun shooting the both of you with all the laughters and jokes thruout the whole journey. Thumbs up guys!

Classy, Elegant and Fun are 3 words I can think of for Mason and Connie’s wedding. The first time I met Connie, Mason came slightly late due to work but Connie is always full of sweet smiles everytime she mention about Mason. The wedding banquet is a cosy and elaborated celebrations which Connie’s idea is to ensure every guest enjoys and bring back with them a piece of beautiful memory from the function.

I really enjoy shooting such intimate wedding and it’s my pleasure to be covering this event.

Pre-Wedding shoot in Yunnan, China

As mentioned in the earlier post, I just returned from Yunnan, China for Junjia and Lijuan’s pre-wedding shoot. The trip was a tiring one due to the high altitude which us people living at sea-level Singapore will need a while to adapt to. Especially the fine thin air and highland sickness. But it never stopped the fun loving and bubbly couple. They were always game and ready to do all the jumping and running. With Shangri-la’s spectacular vast flower bed grassland backed by one of the most beautiful blue sky I have seen, I really enjoyed this trip and here are the photos.

Davern and Sharon Wedding

I shot an interesting wedding for this couple, Davern and Sharon. Both their personalities are different. Davern is camera-shy and doesn’t really smile much. But on the other hand, his wife, Sharon is a bubbly lady who is always presenting a 7 to 7 (molar to molar) smile when facing the camera.

The wedding celebration commences with a battle of the sexes during the gate crashing and ends with a romantic masquerade banquet along with a waltz dance by the couple
