Lost in Iceland – Darren and May

leave a comment

I am fortunate to have set foot on many beautiful countries and cities in the world for photo shoots but Iceland is a place that totally blew me away!

If mother nature is an artist and a great painter, Iceland would be the grand gallery she exhibits her masterpieces. Though the forever changing weather made the photo shoot a challenge, the photo shoot went well and we were also blessed with few nights of witnessing the northern lights.  Thank you Darren and May, for braving the sub-zero temperature for the photo shoot and it was a pleasure to shoot for you both at one of the most beautiful countries I have created my work. Special thanks to make-up artist Jenny Goh and videographer Taylor and Christel for making the trip a very enjoyable and fun road trip. In short, all of you Rocks!

The Art of Portraiture Seminar – Derrick Ong + Nikon Singapore

I am honored to be invited by Nikon School of Singapore to collaborate and give a seminar on The Art of Portraiture photography at LYF@ SMU.  The turnout was good and I am blessed with a great audience who are eager learners. I had an awesome time sharing my experience and answering all the questions. Thank you everyone for attending and a big thank you to all the nice people at Nikon Singapore for arranging the event.

Anny and Brett – Wedding at Flutes Singapore

leave a comment

This post could get you drunk on alcohol or high with laughter!

When I first met Brett in my office, I was like wow, this guy looks like Hulk Hogon, but after talking to him for a few mins, he is a very cool and gentle guy. Anny and Brett’s wedding was held at one of my favorite wedding location in Singapore, Flutes at the National Musuem. The wedding was a simple yet cosy celebration and the whole night was nothing short of laughter and lots of drinking! Enjoy!

Hokkaido with Naoko Kinami-san – A travelogue

leave a comment

I was in Hokkaido a couple of weeks ago by the invitation of Naoko Kinami-san for a collaboration pre-wedding photoshoot. Kinami-san is a wedding planner from Naco-de and we hit off very well on our first meeting in Tokyo last year, she wanted to promote my style of photography to Japanese couples in Japan.

During the trip, the shoot took place in the mountain area of Kamikawa and I am truly impressed by the arrangement she did; getting a very nice cottage for all to get ready and also extra winter jacket and pants to make sure everyone is warm enough. She even hired the mountain guides to do a round of location scouting on snow jet ski, it’s really awesome there are proper briefing and safety checked prior to the shoot!  I must say even at -15 degree at night when we shoot, I do not feel the cold at all. The experience is awesome!

I am truly appreciative of NaokoKinami-san for arranging for my trip covering everything including awesome Japanese seafood to Onsen in the snow. Though I can’t speak Japanese and she can’t speak much English, she is always very patience to communicate with me using google-translate.  Thank you very much.  ありがとうございました

Special thanks also go out to Sasaki-san (Kanami-san’s very hard working assistant).

In the classy mood – Paris

leave a comment

Paris is always a good idea!

I am blessed to have traveled to Paris for photo shoot almost every year since almost 10 years ago. Though compare to other parts of Europe, Paris is slightly more touristy but it have a special flavour in itself that you can’t find in other cities; not just the romance but the artsiness in the small lanes and sidewalks along the Seine River where you know Henri Cartier Bresson might have made a photo here and Pablo Picasso might get inspiration from a cafe he have his morning coffee and croissant.

For me, the classy vibes of the city during different seasons are charming to make photos for my client.  Enjoy this set of pre-wedding photos of Chi Siang and Joanne, awesome couple whom I had a great trip with them enjoying not just the shoot but great food and dining in the city of love. Thank you for having me. : )

ISPWP Fall 2016 Contest Result

It’s December! The year zoomed by in a nick of time. It’s the time of the year where we all look back and see what we have done or not done. While it’s the peak time of the year for wedding, I am also taking some little time off to reflect back on the year. While doing so, one good news came in and the latest ISPWP Fall 2016 contest result was announced and I am happy to receive an early Christmas present with 2 awards under the Pure Art Category.

Thank you everyone who have continously show support in my style of work and to client who have put faith and trust in having me making photo memories for you.

Kazu and Ivy – Wedding at the Fullerton

I love shooting mix culture wedding and this wedding of Kazu and Ivy takes place at one of my favorite hotel, The Fullerton Singapore. Kazu is from Japan and Ivy is from Singapore, the wedding is filled with lots of laughter and blessing from the guests and one of the highlights of the wedding is when the couple marching in wearing the traditional Japanese kimonos. Ivy wore a kimono given to her by Kazu’s late mother. Awesome family love!

I really enjoyed shooting this wedding as everything just beautifully fall in place; Unscripted. The part that this awesome couple just relax and enjoy every single bit of the day is a huge blessing to me as a wedding photographer. All I need to do is quietly get into position, wait and witness a celebration unfolding itself. All wedding should be this way: fun loving, happy, real, no staging and let the awesome feeling of love shine in the happy laughter. Congratulations David and Eunice

Japan Portraiture – Trudy and Yihang

Over the years, I have shot many couples who are same as me, loving Japan. Trudy and Yihang is one such couple and shooting them in Fall last year was an awesome experience. I am thankful they trusted my vision and perspective as I am the kind that will jump on any photo opportunities be it a very far angle shot or shooting on a really busy street and of course even when it rains. : )

Briar and Allan

Briar and Allan lives in Sydney but were back to sunny Singapore for their small and cosy wedding reception and on this day, close family members flew in from all around the world to celebrate with them. They arranged a nice historic peranakan house for a quick photoshoot before the guests arrive and the sweet couple even arranged magic shows for the kids in their family. Nice celebration.

LOMOGRAPHY – The DAGUERREOTYPE ACHROMAT 2.9/64 ART LENS

leave a comment

It’s has been a great working relationship with Lomography and after I review their Petzval art lens last year. I am invited once again for a review of the latest art lens:

The DAGUERREOTYPE ACHROMAT 2.9/64 ART LENS – Reinventing the first photographic lens from 1838

I must say I am honored to be a very small selected group in the world to get a hands-on for this lens which is a prototype version. On first look, it does resemblance the look of the Petzval lens and it’s really robust.

The lens is easy to use except you have to be very patience in the manual focusing. What makes the lens a masterpiece are the Depth of field effects created by the different aperture plate. The Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens works with a Waterhouse Aperture Plate system, which allows full creativity with depth of field, and loads of variation in bokeh effects. If you are a photographer who like dreamy effects straight from the camera, this is the lens for you.

Asides from the classic Waterhouse Aperture plates, for this lens, Lomography has created the Lumière and Aquarelle Aperture plates. The Lumière aperture plates soak images in a radiant, soft glow – and create delicate dotted backgrounds, enriching depth of field. The Aquarelle aperture plates produce a rich and very textured, painterly effect – comparable to watercolor masterworks!

I brought this lens to Japan while I was there for a shoot and I took this beautiful lens for a walk and I had lots of fun shooting with it. It takes a while to get use to it for it’s a fully manual lens and also exploring the different effects created by the aperture plate but after a very short while. It’s really easy to use and the picture effects created are awesome; though some plate pattern are difficult to get a sharp focus but hey those are for the dreamy effects. : )

As I am doing this review, a kick starter event for this lens is happening at the same time and here is the link: http://kck.st/1q5J24v

Wedding Portrait / In the classic mood

leave a comment

As a photographer, when it’s my turn to get into wedding planning, I suddenly understand what my client went through, the kind of excitement, planning and even though we wanted to keep things as simple as possible, certain things do need time to make it happen. One part of it is pre-wedding photos, Jaymie and I did talk about this in the very beginning of the wedding planning that we wanted to shoot at a oversea location but due to time management; I have more oversea assignments and she have very tight flying roster, we didn’t manage to make it happen for a oversea shoot. So I  decided to do something very different which is a studio portrait session and the concept is totally in classic black and white.

This is a partial self shoot and I am very blessed that my good buddy Michael Chan helped me in materialising my idea and helped me in capturing the look that me and Jaymie wanted. So here is the full black and white album layout that I have done for my own wedding. Special thanks goes out to Yukiko Lim for the awesome make up on Jaymie.

Enjoy.

” Paris is always a good idea” – Audrey Hepburn

Paris is one of the very popular pre-wedding destination and I am blessed to have shoot there at least once every year for the past 6 years. Everytime I when I am there, I will imaging my favorite street master photographer Henri Cartier Bresson and Elliot Erwitt walking through the charming Parisan streets or walking along the Seine river creating their black and white master pieces.

This pre-wedding photography shoot for Guan Hong and Wei Teng brought me back to the romantic French capitol and we had a nice photo session travelling towards east of France in Saint Michel. Enjoy the photos. : )

Kai Ching and Shuji in Toyama, Japan

leave a comment

I always love Japan for their food, culture and really nice people, this shoot brought me to Toyama, a city 400km east of Japan from Tokyo. Kaiching is a Singaporean teacher who taught English in Toyama and in the school he met Shuji, a volleyball teacher. Romance blossom and it’s a great pleasure for me to shoot their pre-wedding in the Japanese traditional wedding kimono in Shuji’s hometown; the charming landscape of Toyama prefecture.

Portrait Session in Germany / Lena and Christian

The day before the German wedding, we have arranged a shooting session for Lena and Christian in their German traditional costume. The session helped them warm up and getting used to me with my kick-ass Nikon cameras. Despite the language barrier as both can’t speak much English and I can’t speak German, I manage to compile a very candid session with their way of showing love and affection.  Amazing couple, awesome landscape and beautiful countryside. Enjoy the images.

Lena and Christian – A German Wedding

Please brace yourself that this blog post is filled with a lot of images(I really mean a lot!), a lot of drinking, a lot of dancing and a lot of happy people.

I was very honored to be shooting this wedding for Lena and Christian in the small German village of Prackenbach in Bavaria, Germany. This is the first time I shoot a destination wedding for a local German couple in such a charming  Bavaria village. Despite language barrier with the couple, I had a good time covering the wedding and the pre-traditional German costume shoot. My greatest thanks to the Thome family for the amazing hospitality during my stay.

Thank you June and Immanuel for the arrangement for this shoot and making sure I am always feeling great for the trip.

Congratulations to Lena and Christian. Thank you for having me at your wedding. : )

I realised I always felt stressed about updating my blog posts because writing is not one of my forte. I know that I do not have a good command in English hence every time I will keep it short and let the images tell the unscripted story that I have captured for the wedding.

Congratulations to Julian and Valerie. I really enjoyed this cosy and fun wedding celebrations. Party, party, party!

Kenneth and Jasmine / The Great Gatsby Party

I was already very excited about this wedding when Jasmine and Nancy told me this wedding is different from usual and it’s more of a party for friends. With a Great Gatsby setting, and an invitation of close friends who dressed for the party, every second of the night is filled with laughters, happy tears, many glasses of wines and lots of amazing dance moves.

Congratulations to Kenneth and Jasmine, it’s a pleasure to cover your wedding. Not forgetting working with many wonderful industry friends: Yang, Nancy and Zech /Substance Films,  Jyue Huey & Bobbie / The Make Up Room and Stefan / Compass Entertainment. You guys are awesome as always.

Tokyo Pre-wedding / Jaslyn and Kenny

leave a comment

Last weekend, Jaslyn and Kenny had their wedding celebration and I am very happy to see that they have set up a nice photo gallery for the pre-wedding images I have taken for them in Tokyo earlier this year.

I still remember vividly on my first meet up with the couple, we were already talking about our love for Japanese food and delicacies and the next thing I know; we are on the streets of Tokyo. I had a great time shooting the pre-wedding for this very sincere and jovial couple and despite we were there mid of March, we were very lucky to have one Sakura tree bloom for us for the photo session.

Congratulations to Jaslyn and Kenny, pleasure is mine to be your wedding photographer. : )

Romance in Toyama

I had a great time traveling to east of Japan to shoot a casual session for this lovely Japanese couple Minami and Kohei alongside with my friend Kai Ching who have resided in Toyama. The couple have just signed their marriage cert days before the shoot  and I really enjoy shooting this engagement session: simple, natural, chill and not too much posing. Lots of fun.

PDN Top Knots 2015 Contest

leave a comment

I got hold of a copy of the May issue PDN magazine today and it put a smile on my face as this is the first time I took part in the PDN Top Knots annual contest and I won. This pre-wedding photo of  Peiyen and Haoyu was taken at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo last year. I still remember vividly that morning we went to Shinjuku Park in the early morning but it wasn’t open yet thus my make up artist Yukiko suggested we switch location to shoot at the Yoyogi park for the Sakura. As I am a big fan of black and white, lines and shadows, the stairs of this overhead bridge caught my attention. The lighting is just perfect for me as I visualise and made the shot.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Peiyen and Haoyu and many more wonderful couples for trusting my perspective and allow me to create in full capacity of my work even when some of my work are drawn towards more abstract.

Hong Kong Pre-Wedding / Eunice and Jerry

leave a comment

The first time I met Eunice and Jerry was on the day before the shoot. They have booked me prior to the shooting in Hong Kong via online and initially I thought either one of them should be a Singaporean as recent years of travelling shoot, usually either one of them is Singaporean thus they google wedding photographer Singapore. After a catch up over drinks, I learnt that they are both Hong Konger and I am surprise at first because Hong Kong have got many good photographers. After some understanding, they told me they are both architect and they do not want the usual bridal boutique style of photography and they have seen my work on how I work with composition on framing, using of lights, abstract and lines and most importantly, the photos are filled with the personality and character of the couple that draws them to sending me enquiry and eventually booking me.

I have a great time shooting this couple in Hong Kong as the approach was not the usual norm of shooting on the busy streets of Hong Kong. : )

Congratulations to Eunice and Jerry.
